Chip Leaders Lift KOSPI 2.42%, Widening Its Lead Over KOSDAQ

Foreign investors bought a net KRW 3.0387 trillion in the KOSPI but sold a net KRW 65.8 billion in the KOSDAQ. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix rose while two KOSDAQ chip-equipment shares fell.

Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix rose 2.43% and 3.26%, respectively, leading the KOSPI higher. Foreign investors' net buying of more than KRW 3 trillion was concentrated in the KOSPI, while both foreign and institutional investors were net sellers in the KOSDAQ.

The KOSPI reached an intraday high of 7,010.86 before closing at 6,977.94. The KOSDAQ rebounded from an intraday low of 845.41 to finish at 864.65. There were 677 gainers in the KOSPI and 904 in the KOSDAQ, but the KOSPI posted the larger index gain as moves in its large-cap constituents carried greater weight. The USD/KRW reference rate was 1,414.90.

Foreign investors bought a net KRW 3.0387 trillion in the KOSPI, while retail and institutional investors were net sellers. Retail investors were the only net buyers in the KOSDAQ, where foreign and institutional investors sold a combined net KRW 318.8 billion. Foreign flows therefore moved in opposite directions across the two markets, whose gains differed by 2.04 percentage points.

Chip leaders diverged from KOSDAQ equipment shares

Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, highlighted as intraday conditions in the morning briefing, retained gains of 2.43% and 3.26% through the close. But KOSDAQ-listed semiconductor equipment makers JUSUNG Engineering and Wonik IPS fell 0.84% and 2.83%, respectively. The gains in the two large chipmakers did not extend in the same direction to these KOSDAQ equipment shares.
